St Helens Primary School has launched a comprehensive Environmental Conservation Program aimed at creating environmentally conscious citizens and maintaining sustainable school practices.
The program, developed in partnership with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), includes various activities designed to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices among students, staff, and the wider community.
Program Components:
- Tree Planting Initiative: Each student plants and maintains a tree on school grounds
- Waste Management: Comprehensive recycling and waste reduction system
- School Garden: Organic vegetable garden maintained by students
- Environmental Clubs: Student-led environmental conservation groups
- Energy Conservation: Solar lighting and water conservation measures
Educational Integration:
Environmental conservation topics have been integrated into the curriculum across subjects:
- Science lessons on ecosystem protection
- Social Studies focus on environmental challenges
- Mathematics calculations related to resource conservation
- English compositions about environmental protection
Environmental Program Coordinator Mr. Francis Mubiru explained: "We want our students to understand their role as environmental stewards. This program teaches practical skills while fostering a deep appreciation for nature."
The program has already yielded visible results with improved school grounds, reduced waste, and increased student awareness of environmental issues. Students have planted over 100 indigenous trees around the school compound.
Plans are underway to extend the program to the wider community, with students serving as environmental ambassadors in their neighborhoods.
